Ndutu & Southern Serengeti (Calving)

Day 2 · Ndutu & Southern Serengeti (Calving)

Arusha to Ndutu

After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey toward Ndutu, located in the southern Serengeti ecosystem, passing through the scenic Ngorongoro Conservation Area along the way. From December to March, this region comes alive with the calving season, as thousands of wildebeests and zebras give birth daily. The area’s short, nutrient-rich grasses make it an ideal nursery, providing both food for the young and clear visibility for adults to spot predators, making it a relatively safe haven for the newborns. You’ll enjoy a full afternoon game drive, taking in the incredible wildlife activity until sunset. Afterwards, you’ll head to your camp for dinner and an overnight stay, surrounded by the sounds of the wild. Overnight at Lala Salama Serengeti Camp • Mid-range tented camp located inside Serengeti NP.

From December to March the migration spreads across the short-grass plains of Ndutu and southern Serengeti to calve. Half a million wildebeest are born in a six-week window, which in turn brings every predator within walking distance.

Our camp moves with the herds. Mornings are a slow circuit of the calving fields with cheetah hunting on open ground and lions on the woodland edge. Afternoons return to the lakes for sunset and a hot bucket shower back at camp.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today's plan

  • Game drives across the calving plains
  • Cheetah and lion sightings on open ground
  • Visits to Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek
  • Optional bush walk and night drive (private concession)

Day 3 · Ndutu & Southern Serengeti (Calving)

Full-Day Game Drive in Ndutu – Calving Season Experience

After an early start, you’ll have the option to head out for a sunrise game drive, then return to the camp for a warm breakfast before continuing with a full-day exploration of the Ndutu region. Alternatively, guests may choose to depart early with both breakfast and lunch packed, allowing for an extended day in the bush and the chance to witness incredible wildlife activity at first light. This is an ideal time to observe the calving season, as thousands of wildebeest and zebras give birth on the open plains, often attracting predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. You’ll spend the day immersed in this dramatic and beautiful ecosystem before returning to your camp after sunset for dinner and an overnight stay. Day 4 · Ndutu & Southern Serengeti (Calving)

Ndutu to Ngorongoro Crater

Your final safari day begins with an early departure around 6:30 a.m., following either a light breakfast at your lodge or with a packed breakfast to enjoy on the go. You’ll make your way to the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Descend into the crater for a 5-hour game drive, where you’ll have excellent chances of encountering a wide array of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, hippos, hyenas, black rhinos, and possibly lions. The breathtaking scenery combined with the density of animals makes this a true safari highlight, so be sure to have your camera ready! After the game drive, you’ll ascend the crater walls and begin the approximately 4-hour drive back to Arusha. Upon arrival in the evening, you’ll be dropped off at your preferred location in Arusha or transferred directly to the airport, depending on your travel plans.

Pop-top vehicles, beanbags on request and unrushed stops at every sighting.

Good to know

Everything you need to plan, pack and travel with confidence.

Best time to travel

Year-round. Peak game viewing runs June to October, when the bush is dry and animals concentrate around water. January to March is the dramatic green season, with wildebeest calving in southern Serengeti and excellent predator action. November is a brief shoulder month with low prices and lush landscapes.

Group size

Designed for 2 to 6 guests in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a guaranteed window seat for everyone. Families, honeymooners and small friend groups are our sweet spot. Larger parties travel in additional vehicles, never with strangers.

Physical rating

Easy. Days are spent in the vehicle with comfortable lodge or tented camp accommodation. Optional walking safaris are graded separately and require basic fitness.

Getting there

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is served by KLM, Qatar, Turkish, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways and Precision Air. We meet you at the gate and handle every transfer for the rest of the trip.

Visa & entry

USD 50 single-entry e-visa for most nationalities, applied for online at eservices.immigration.go.tz at least two weeks before travel. US passport holders need the USD 100 multiple-entry visa.

Currency & payments

US dollars (post-2009 bills only) are widely accepted; Tanzanian shillings for small purchases. Major lodges accept Visa and Mastercard but a small surcharge may apply.

Electricity

230 V, UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G). Most camps have charging in the main area; bring a universal adapter.

Connectivity

4G coverage across Arusha and Zanzibar, intermittent in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Most lodges have Wi-Fi in the main lounge. A local Vodacom or Airtel SIM is cheap and easy to buy at the airport.

Tipping guidance

A guideline, not an obligation. Around USD 25 per guest per day for your driver-guide and USD 10 per day for lodge staff (collective tip box). On Kilimanjaro, USD 20 to 25 per climber per day for the crew is standard.

Responsible travel

We are a Tanzanian-owned company and 100% of our guides, cooks and office staff are Tanzanian. Park fees flow directly to TANAPA and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our camps follow leave-no-trace principles and we offset every vehicle kilometre through a verified East African reforestation program.
