Tipping on a Tanzania Safari — Who, How Much, When

Tipping is one of the most-Googled questions about a Tanzania safari — and most of the advice online is inflated. Here's what the industry actually expects.

Tipping is part of safari culture in East Africa, but the figures floating online are often inflated by lodges and tour operators with skin in the game. Here are realistic rates from a local operator.

Driver-guide USD 20-30 per day, total, per couple. The guide is with you all day — they make the safari.

Camp & lodge staff USD 10-15 per day, per couple, into the staff tip box. Don't tip individuals unless they go far above (e.g. a butler).

Bush-plane pilots No tip expected.

Kilimanjaro porters & guides The most-tipped group in Tanzania. Budget USD 250-350 per climber, distributed by the lead guide following KPAP fair-pay guidelines.

How to carry it Bring US dollars in clean, post-2013 notes (banks reject older ones). Mix of $20s, $10s and $5s. Keep tips in envelopes per recipient.

We brief every client on tipping before they travel — there's no expectation, no awkwardness.
