Budget Tanzania Safaris - Honest Camping & Value Lodge Trips

Genuine private safaris at camping and value-lodge prices - same senior guides, same parks, same Land Cruiser, simply a simpler bed at the end of the day.

A budget Tanzania safari does not mean a worse safari. Park fees, guides and vehicles cost the same whichever bed you sleep in - the difference is camping or a simple lodge instead of a tented suite. Our budget itineraries run from about USD 245 per person per day for private camping, using our own crew, chef and equipment at campsites inside Tarangire, the Serengeti and on the Ngorongoro rim. You still get a private Land Cruiser, a senior guide, full board and every park fee included.

What a budget safari actually costs

Park and crater fees alone are roughly USD 70-80 per person per day in the Serengeti and USD 70 per person plus USD 300 per vehicle for a crater descent, so no honest operator can go far below USD 200 per person per day.

Our budget tier starts at about USD 245 per person per day for private camping and about USD 320 for value lodges, both including the vehicle, guide, fuel, park fees, full board, camping equipment and crew, and airport transfers. Anything advertised dramatically lower usually means shared vehicles, skipped park days or unpaid crews.

Camping vs value lodges

Private camping puts you inside the parks. Our crew drives ahead, pitches your tents, and cooks three hot meals a day. You hear hyena at night and wake with the light. Tents are walk-in dome tents with mattresses, and campsites have basic shared ablutions.

Value lodges put you in a simple room with a private bathroom, hot shower and buffet meals, usually just outside the park gates in Karatu, Mto wa Mbu or on the Serengeti boundary. Slightly more driving each morning, considerably more comfort.

Sample budget itineraries

3-day Serengeti & Ngorongoro camping - Arusha to central Serengeti, a full day on the plains, then the crater on the way home.

5-day Wakanda Special camping - Tarangire, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater with two nights inside the Serengeti.

7-day Best Northern Circuit camping - the full circuit including Lake Manyara, plus a walking safari option.

10-day private budget safari - the long version, adding Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe, Empakai and more Serengeti time.

What we never cut

We do not share vehicles between unrelated clients, we do not skip park days to save entry fees, we do not use worn-out vehicles, and we pay our crews and guides properly. Budget in our world means simpler beds and self-catered meals - never a compromise on safety, wildlife time or the people who look after you.

Best months for value

April, May and November are the low-season months: green landscapes, dramatic skies, far fewer vehicles and the lowest lodge rates of the year. Resident wildlife in Tarangire, Manyara and the crater is excellent year-round, and the calving herds fill the southern Serengeti from January to March, which is also good value outside the December and February peaks.

How to keep the cost down

Travel in a group of four to six to share the vehicle cost, choose camping for the Serengeti nights and a lodge for the crater night, avoid the July-September and Christmas peaks, keep drive days efficient rather than doubling back, and skip internal flights unless you are short of time.
