Zanzibar — Which Coast Should You Stay On?

Zanzibar has four very different coasts. Picking the wrong one is the single most common honeymoon mistake we see.

Zanzibar isn't one beach — it's four very different coasts, each with its own rhythm, tides and wind patterns.

East coast (Pongwe, Matemwe, Kiwengwa) Classic white sand, turquoise water, big tidal range. Our default recommendation for honeymooners — quiet, beautiful, world-class lodges. Best wind direction in our Tanzania summer (Jun-Oct).

North coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) No tides, party scene at Nungwi, calmer at Kendwa. Best for travellers who want nightlife and don't mind crowds. We avoid Nungwi for honeymooners.

South coast (Kizimkazi, Paje, Jambiani) Quieter, dolphin tours, kitesurfing capital. Great for active travellers and longer stays.

West coast (Stone Town) No swimming beach. Heritage and history. 1-2 night cultural stop, not a beach base.

Wind direction matters Kuzi (Jun-Sep) blows from the south, making the east coast calmer than the south. Kaskazi (Dec-Mar) reverses this. We pick the coast that matches your travel month.
