The Big Five in Tanzania — Where to See Each One

The Big Five is alive and well in Tanzania — here's where to see each species and how to plan a trip that gets all five.

Tanzania is one of the few countries on earth where you can realistically see all of the Big Five in a single week.

Lion — Serengeti and Ngorongoro Lion prides are everywhere in the Serengeti's central Seronera valley and on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Sightings on most game drives.

Leopard — Seronera river valley The sausage trees and riverine forest along the Seronera River are some of the best leopard country in Africa. A senior guide is the difference between seeing one and missing one.

Black rhino — Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania's only realistic rhino sighting is in the Ngorongoro Crater, where 25-30 critically endangered black rhino live on the crater floor.

Elephant — Tarangire (dry season) Tarangire holds the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania, especially June-October when the river concentrates wildlife.

Buffalo — every park Lone bulls and big herds across the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. The easiest Big Five tick.

A Big-Five itinerary Our 7-day classic includes Tarangire (elephant), Serengeti (lion + leopard), and Ngorongoro (rhino + buffalo). Most clients see all five.
