Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the most wildlife-rich corner of Africa. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro alone hold the planet's highest predator densities, the world's last great wildebeest migration, the densest African elephant herds in Tarangire, and roughly 30 of Tanzania's 122 remaining black rhino. Our wildlife safaris are built around what you most want to see — Big Five, big cats, the migration, rhino, wild dog, leopards in trees — with a senior guide who can read tracks and movement.

The Big Five in Tanzania — realistic odds

On a 7-day Northern Circuit trip you have near-certain odds on lion (every day in the Serengeti and Crater), elephant (giant herds in Tarangire and the Crater), buffalo (huge herds in Crater and central Serengeti) and leopard (sausage trees in the Seronera Valley, kopjes in the central Serengeti). Black rhino is harder — your best chance is the Ngorongoro Crater (4–6 sightings a week on average) and the Moru Kopjes in southern Serengeti.

With a 10-day trip and good planning, every guest in 2024 saw all five.

The Great Migration — calving and crossings

1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra and 350,000 Thomson's gazelle move in a clockwise loop across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem each year. The two highlights are calving (late January–March on the southern Ndutu plains — 8,000+ births per day at the peak) and the Mara River crossings (July through early October in the northern Serengeti). A migration-focused safari positions your camps in the right region for your dates.

Big cats — lion, leopard, cheetah

The Serengeti holds roughly 3,000 lions in 300+ prides. The Crater concentrates lions at extraordinary density (one of the densest populations anywhere). Leopards favour the riverine forest along the Seronera River and the Mara River. Cheetah hunt on the open plains of central and southern Serengeti — the Naabi Hill plains in January and the Loita plains in June–July are particularly good for cheetah action. Our guides track them daily on the radio network and reposition you to where the action is.

Rare and special species

Beyond the Big Five, Tanzania holds: wild dog (rare on the Northern Circuit but resident in Loliondo concessions), serval and caracal (open plains at dawn), bat-eared fox, golden jackal, striped hyena, pangolin (very rare, mostly Mwiba and Tarangire), African civet, aardwolf and aardvark (mostly Mwiba night drives), and over 500 bird species across the parks. A specialist wildlife guide can target these on request.

Best month for a wildlife safari

June–October: peak dry, Mara River crossings, all Big Five reliable. January–March: calving, big cat action peaks. November–December: short rains, beautiful light, herds moving south. April–May: green low season, lush bush, fewer vehicles, occasional muddy days. There is no bad month — only different highlights.

Wildlife photography on safari

Every Land Cruiser has a window seat for everyone, a pop-up roof for low-angle shots, and bean-bag rests on request. We can extend daily drive times (full-day with picnic) for serious photographers, and on luxury safaris we arrange dedicated photography vehicles with off-road permits in private concessions like Singita and Mwiba.
