Tanzania Safari with Kids — The Honest Family Planning Guide

Everything we tell families before they book — minimum ages, smart pacing, kid-friendly lodges and how to keep teenagers engaged.

Family safaris are some of our favourite trips to plan, but they need different thinking than couples-only itineraries.

Minimum age Most lodges accept kids from 6+. A handful of high-end lodges have 12+ rules. We brief on this when matching lodges to your family.

Pacing Game drives are long and hot. With kids under 10 we plan: morning game drives only, swim/rest afternoons, picnics over restaurant lunches, family suites or interconnecting rooms.

Best parks for families • **Ngorongoro Crater** — short drives, dense game, lots happens fast. • **Tarangire** — playful elephant herds, walking safaris on private concessions. • **Central Serengeti** — fly in to save the road day. • **Lake Manyara** — canopy walkway, hot springs, half-day fits a kid's attention span.

Skip these Long driving days. Single-night stays. Camps without pools. Walking safaris with kids under 12.

Health Malaria is present year-round. Consult your GP about kid-appropriate prophylaxis. Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from a yellow-fever country.

Best months for families June-October (dry season — fewer insects, easy game viewing). Avoid March-May (long rains, mud, malaria risk peaks).
