The short answer: three nights in the Serengeti is the working minimum, five nights is where the park opens up. Two nights is possible and still worth it if that is all you have. One night is a waste of park fees.
The Serengeti is 14,750 square kilometres. Central Seronera to Kogatende on the Mara River is a five to six hour drive on park roads. The number of nights you book decides how many sectors you can reach, and sectors are the whole game.
What each length gives you

Sector matters more than nights
The migration is not in the whole Serengeti at once. Where you sleep decides what you see.

If you have three nights in July and you sleep in Seronera, you have missed the crossings by a five-hour drive. Booking the right sector for your month matters more than adding a night.
Fly or drive
Arusha to Seronera by road is roughly 7 to 8 hours including Ngorongoro. A light aircraft is 1 hour 15 minutes. On trips of four nights or fewer we usually recommend flying in at least one direction, because a saved travel day is effectively an extra game-viewing day for about the same money once you count fuel and an extra lodge night.

- Total trip 5 days: 2 nights Serengeti, 1 night Ngorongoro area, 1 night Tarangire or Karatu. - Total trip 7 days: 3 nights Serengeti across two sectors, 1 night crater rim, 1 night Tarangire. - Total trip 9 to 10 days: 4 to 5 nights Serengeti, plus Ndutu or Lake Eyasi and the crater.
Is two nights enough to see the Big Five?
You will very likely see lion, elephant and buffalo in two nights around Seronera. Leopard is a coin toss. Rhino is not a Serengeti animal in practice, which is why almost every itinerary pairs the Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater, where black rhino are seen most days from the crater floor.

Is 2 nights in the Serengeti enough?+
It is enough for one full game-viewing day in the central Seronera area, and most guests still rate it as the highlight of the trip. Three nights is where you can add a second sector or slow down on a good sighting instead of driving on.
Is 1 night in the Serengeti worth it?+
Rarely. You arrive mid afternoon and leave after breakfast, but you pay park fees for two 24-hour periods. If you only have one night, fly in so at least the whole day is spent in the park.
How many days do you need for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro?+
Five days total works: three nights Serengeti, one night on the crater rim, with a crater descent on the way out. Seven days lets you add Tarangire without a rushed day.
How long is the drive from Seronera to the Mara River?+
Five to six hours on park roads, with game viewing along the way. That is why crossing-season trips sleep at Kogatende rather than driving up from Seronera.
How many nights for the river crossings?+
Three nights minimum in the northern Serengeti between July and October. Crossings are unpredictable; more mornings at the river means better odds.
Do I need more nights in calving season?+
Two to three nights in the Ndutu area from December to March is usually plenty, because the herds concentrate on the short-grass plains and the predators follow them.
