Park by park
Serengeti. The highest lion density in Africa, roughly 3,000 lions in the ecosystem. Cheetah on the southern plains, leopard along the Seronera river. In migration months, 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra.
Ngorongoro Crater. About 25,000 large animals in 260 square kilometres. It is the most reliable black rhino sighting in Tanzania, plus enormous bull elephants with tusks you no longer see elsewhere.
Tarangire. Elephant country. Dry-season herds of 200 plus around the river, along with fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk that you will not find in the Serengeti.
Lake Manyara. Tree-climbing lions if you are lucky, huge baboon troops, and thousands of flamingos when the water level is right.
Lake Natron. Lesser flamingos in tens of thousands, breeding on the soda flats.
Birds
Over 1,100 species in Tanzania. Even non-birders end up counting lilac-breasted rollers, secretary birds, kori bustards, grey crowned cranes and superb starlings. November to April brings the migrants and the best birding of the year.
What changes your odds
- Number of days. Leopard odds climb sharply from 3 nights to 5 nights in the Serengeti. - Private vehicle. You stay at a sighting as long as you want, and you can wait out a stalking cheetah. - Season. Dry season concentrates animals around water; green season disperses them but brings newborns and predators. - Time of day. Almost every big cat sighting happens in the first two hours after sunrise or the last two before sunset.
What nobody can promise
A kill, a river crossing, a leopard, or a specific animal on a specific day. Anyone who promises those is selling something. What we can promise is early starts, a guide who knows the ground and a vehicle that does not have to be back for someone else's schedule.

Will I see the Big Five in Tanzania?+
Four of the five are near certain on a 7-day Northern Circuit trip. Black rhino needs a Ngorongoro Crater day, where the sighting rate is around 70 percent, usually at distance.
What are the chances of seeing a leopard?+
Roughly 50 to 70 percent over three nights in the Serengeti, rising with more nights. The Seronera river valley in the central Serengeti has the best density on the circuit.
Where can I see cheetah in Tanzania?+
The short-grass plains of the southern and central Serengeti and the Ndutu area. Cheetah hunt in daylight, so mornings on open plains are the best strategy.
How many animals are in the Ngorongoro Crater?+
About 25,000 large animals within roughly 260 square kilometres, which is why it has the highest sighting rate per hour of any place on the circuit.
Are there wild dogs in Tanzania's Northern Circuit?+
Rarely. Small populations move through Loliondo and the eastern Serengeti, but they should not be an expectation on a Northern Circuit trip.
What is the best park for elephants?+
Tarangire in the dry season, from June to October, when herds of 200 or more gather along the Tarangire River.
