A migration safari is not one trip. It is a decision tree, and the order of the decisions is what people get wrong. Work through these four steps in sequence.
Step 1: decide which migration event you want

If your dates are fixed by work or school, start from the month and accept the event it gives you. Every month of the year has a good migration answer somewhere in the ecosystem.
Step 2: pick the sector, then the camp
Camps are only good if they are in the right place for your month. A beautiful lodge in Seronera in September is a five-hour drive from the crossings. We move guests between camps rather than keep them in one comfortable spot.

Step 3: allocate nights
- Crossings: three nights minimum at Kogatende. Crossings are unpredictable and three mornings at the river changes the odds dramatically. - Calving: two to three nights at Ndutu is usually enough, as the action is concentrated. - Total trip: five days as a fly-in, seven days as a road circuit with Ngorongoro and Tarangire, ten days if you want the crater, Lake Eyasi and two Serengeti sectors.
Step 4: choose fly-in or drive

When to book
Crossing-season camps in the northern Serengeti are the tightest inventory in Tanzania. Book 9 to 12 months ahead for July to October, and 6 months ahead for calving season. Christmas and New Year sell out early too. Shoulder months can often be arranged 8 to 10 weeks out.

What ruins migration trips
- One night at the river. The commonest mistake and the biggest one. - Booking a camp before choosing a month. The camp cannot move; the herds do. - Chasing an exact crossing date. Nobody can promise one. Guides read the herds daily and reposition, which is why a private vehicle matters here more than anywhere else. - Peak-season crowds at bad hours. We leave camp at first light and carry breakfast.

How far in advance should I book a migration safari?+
Nine to twelve months for the July to October crossing season, six months for the January to March calving season. Northern Serengeti camps are limited and sell out first.
Can you guarantee I will see a river crossing?+
No honest operator can. Crossings depend on rain, grazing and herd mood. Three nights at Kogatende between July and October gives most guests at least one crossing, and the river banks are spectacular regardless.
Which is better, calving season or the crossings?+
Calving in February gives you more predator action, open plains, off-road driving at Ndutu and lower prices. The crossings in August and September give you the single most dramatic scene in African wildlife, at peak prices.
How many days do I need for a migration safari?+
Five days as a fly-in trip with three nights in the migration sector. Seven days if you drive and want Ngorongoro and Tarangire included.
Is a migration safari good for children?+
Yes, with two adjustments: fly rather than drive the long legs, and pick a camp with family tents. Calving season suits younger children better because drives are shorter and the plains are open.
